Police in Pemba have detained a fellow officer after he allegedly assaulted his wife.
Southern Province police commissioner Mary Chikwanda said constable Richard Mufalo was reported to have gone home drunk around midnight on Thursday and started playing loud music, much to the displeasure of his wife, Jackline Musho.
She said Musho complained about Mufalo’s conduct, leading to an argument and her subsequent assault.
Police sources said Mufalo later started kicking the children in the house, forcing them to go to school around 05:00 hours.
They said at this point, Mufalo’s wife attempted to intervene but he turned on her.
Chikwanda said a docket would soon be opened against Mufalo, who is currently in custody.
“As police command, we will ensure that the law takes its course. This officer will be taken to court because no one is above the law regardless of their position,” she said.
Chikwanda said the couple was believed to have had marital disputes ever since they got married.
Efforts to get a comment from Musho proved futile as her mobile phone went unanswered.
She was, however, reported to have gone back to her matrimonial home after being discharged from Monze hospital.
