10570343_645457028907729_2881219862863546902_nHE Zambian community in London yesterday held a send-off Mass for president Michael Sata at the Church of Our Lady, St Johns Woods. And president Sata’s body arrives today and will be taken to Mulungushi International Conference Centre, where it will lie in state until November 11.
Bishop Nicholas Hudson of the Westminster Diocese presided over the Mass and the concelebrant was Fr Clement Mukuka, a Zambian chaplain. During the requiem mass, finance minister Alexander Chikwanda, who led a delegation of ministers that included Harry Kalaba, Jean Kapata and Inonge Wina, said president Sata served Zambia diligently. He said Zambians in the diaspora had shown the true Zambian spirit by paying their last respects to president Sata.
And Kalaba thanked Dr Christine Kaseba, the British government and all Zambians for supporting president Sata during his illness and death. Fr Mukuka, in his homily, said the late president was a voice for the voiceless and that he always spoke his mind. “President Sata was a man of the people who abided by the teachings of Jesus Christ,” said Fr Mukuka.
The Mass was attended by Dr Kaseba, president Sata’s children and other government officials. President Sata died in London on Tuesday night.
Meanwhile, Secretary to the Cabinet Dr Rowland Msiska says the government has declared November 11, the day of president Sata’s burial, as a public holiday.
