NKANA Football Club treasurer Alex Munasha says late president Michael Sata presided over the most successful period in the country’s football history.
In a message of condolences following the passing of president Sata, Munasha said: “We will remember him as having presided over national affairs, especially in 2012 when Zambia lifted the AfCON trophy under his reign. Nkana won the 12th title and reached the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup under his reign.”
President Sata, 77 died in a London hospital on Tuesday.
Power Dynamos secretary Ricky Mamfunda said the club was shocked at news of the president’s death.
“As Power Dynamos, we are deeply shocked by the death of president Sata, who was incidentally patron of the Chipolopolo. We are mourning with the nation. From the football fraternity, he was always there and very instrumental in championing the cause of football. We shall miss him greatly in that regard,” said Mamfunda.
And Zesco United secretary Justin Mumba said: “During his tenure, not only has our football experienced massive development of infrastructure that supports the game of which Zesco United is a beneficiary with regard to Levy Mwanawasa Stadium which we now use, sponsorship to football grew which culminated in Zambia winning the first-ever AfCON and there is generally been peace in our football during his rule and he shall solely be missed.”
