Ndola Man Batters Mom, Convicted

A man of Ndola’s Chipulukusu who allegedly assaulted his mother over relish has been convicted of the charge by the Ndola Magistrate’s Court.
Magistrate Chitundu Chongo convicted Isaac Phiri, 21, after pleading guilty to the charge of assault.
“On your own admission of the facts as being correct, I find you guilty as charged and I accordingly convict you. However, I have adjourned the matter to November 17, 2014, for sentencing,” Ms Chongo said.
In mitigation, Phiri asked the court for leniency stating that he was a reformed person and had asked for forgiveness from his mother.
He vowed never to commit a similar offence.
Particulars of the offence are that on October 25, this year, in Ndola, the accused assaulted Irene Phiri.
Phiri told the court that he assaulted his mother as he was drunk and could not reason properly.
Facts before the court are that on the material day around 16.30 hours, the victim received insults from her son after she admonished him over relish.
The court further heard that the victim questioned her son as to why he ate relish without permission but at that point, the accused attacked the victim.
The court heard that as the victim tried to run away, she was pursued by the accused until she reached Chipulukusu police post, where she reported the matter.
Phiri was later arrested by officers from the police post.
The matter comes up on November 17, 2014, for sentencing.
