The Luangwa district education board secretary’s office has expressed worry over public and private sector workers who are engaging in sexual relations with schoolgirls.
District education board secretary, Veronica Mubanga, told the District Development Coordinating Committee meeting that her office had observed with concern and worry at the number of workers going out with school-going pupils, especially those in examination classes.
Mubanga told the committee members that workers were picking schoolgirls during weekends who were then taken to lodges where they were being abused. She appealed to the committee members to intervene as such vices had negative impact on the girl child’s education.
Luangwa district commissioner, Eunie Mumba, warned to deal strongly with any public officer found abusing schoolgirls. Mumba said adults should take keen interest in protecting the girl child so that government objectives of educating her were achieved.
The committee resolved that the DEBS, the District AIDS Coordinating Advisor and the health offices, including the security wings, should work together to identify the lodges where the girls were taken to and bring to book workers perpetrating the vice.
