A 74-year old man of Siatontola village in Choma was last Wednesday night shot dead by unknown people on suspicion that he was a wizard, barely a week after a 91-year-old woman of Chief Simwatachela’s area in Zimba was stabbed with a knife by unknown people on suspicion that she was a witch.
Southern Province deputy commissioner of Police Milner Muyambango yesterday identified the deceased as Nason Mulalu, who died after suffering a gunshot wound in the head.
“On November 19, 2014, Elizabeth Siangwe, 46, of Siantontola village reported that his father Nason Mulalu was shot dead by unknown people at night.
“The man died after sustaining a bullet wound on the right side of his head and our preliminary investigations into this matter reveal that the man was being accused of practising witchcraft,” Mr Muyambango said.
He said Mr Mulalu’s body is lying in Choma General Hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem and burial.
Cases of the elderly reportedly killed or injured on suspicion of practising witchcraft are rife in the rural parts of Southern Province.
Killing or injuring a person on suspicion of practising witchcraft is a crime under the Witchcraft Act.
