Zambians are justified in questioning the health status of presidential candidates given the country’s history of deaths of sitting presidents, says the UPND.
UPND deputy spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa also called for constitutional office bearers to be subjected to medical scrutiny just as it is being suggested for presidents. The Zambia Medical Association recently called for medical scrutiny of presidential candidates just as other Zambians looking for employment are made to undergo medical tests.
This call raised debate, with a number of politicians, among them Chongwe member of parliament Sylvia Masebo last week saying Zambians are tired of state funerals and urging citizens not to vote for PF presidential candidate Edgar Lungu because of “his questionable health”. But Lungu challenged people questioning his health to a medical test, adding that those who think they are healthier than him will see what doctors with find them with.
And Mweetwa said it was only reasonable for Zambians to question Lungu’s health status because history of losing sitting presidents had tormented them. “Edgar Lungu’s health, they have the right to question whether he is fit or not fit to hold the office of president. Just like Zambians are free to question whether any other candidate vying for the presidency is fit or not because of what history holds for this country,” he said. Mweetwa told Lungu to put speculation about his health to rest”. “He must redeem himself and give interpretation of his looks to the people of this country, and the only reason why people are questioning it is because he has decided to vie for the presidency of Zambia,” he said.
Mweetwa also said the call for medical tests should not only be restricted to presidential candidates but all constitutional office bearers.
