The Zambian Road Safety Trust (ZRST) is the steward and initiator of the National Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims in Zambia Campaign.
ZRST will host a commemoration of the National Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims in Zambia tomorrow, Saturday, 7th February, 2015, from 14:00hrs at the Anglican Cathedral of the Holy Cross, in LUSAKA. The day will bring together victims, relatives of killed or injured victims, stakeholders, churches, corporate community, interested members of public and conducted by the Interdenominational Church Mother Bodies.
The National Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims which will be commemorated annually on the 7th day of February coincides with the Chibombo Post Bus Accident, February 7, 2013, one of the worst horror road crash which killed 51 people.
The Commemoration of this day will serve as an important reminder that these fatalities and injuries are preventable. It’s the day Zambians will stop to recognize and remember those individuals who have lost their lives on one of our nation’s roads, while also remembering friends, family and colleagues who have been affected by these tragedies.
Oswald Chitete “AUSWARD” Gospel Artist from Ndola
“It’s a very important day, it’s not only for us who are affected directly by losing our beloved ones, accidents can happen to anyone at anytime that is why it’s called an accident. Most of us road users are very careless. It was the carelessness of the other driver who was rushing to feed his pigs that caused the Chibombo accident and deaths of many lives”.
Oswald among the relatives of the victims who will be attending the National Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims in Zambia. He will share his testimony about his life after losing his beloved ones and will perform the Album titled “Yaweh album” which was realised after the tragedy and now dominating in most airwaves in Zambia. He lost his wife and daughter in the Chibombo accident.
Daniel Mwamba, Chair of the Zambia Road Safety Trust said:
“The objective of the day is to raise awareness in Zambia and specifically among those with high-risk driving behaviours as to the impact of road crashes on their communities. While road traffic deaths are counted in the year they occur, a family remains bereaved forever. The bereaved are not counted or included in road traffic injury data. Many others remain deeply affected by the loss of a friend, colleague, neighbour or member of the community. Road traffic injuries leave behind shattered families and communities”.
