- Be as healthy as you can be. Eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, don’t drink alcohol or smoke and exercise regularly.
- If you are planning to start a family, talk to your healthcare provider aboutmedications to prevent mother-to-child transmission.
- Start taking antiretroviral treatment before you become pregnant in order to strengthen your own health and reduce the risk of passing the virus to your child.
- Get your new born baby tested after birth to confirm your child’s HIV status.
- When you go in to deliver your baby remember to ask for the medication you need to prevent passing the virus to your child. If you aren’t on ARVs you will receive one dose and your baby will be given a 6-week course to take.
