kalamboEx-Zambia midfielder and 1974 AFCON silver medallists Kaiser Kalambo has  died

The 60-year-old pioneering member of the famed 1974 team died in Lusaka on Tuesday after a long illness.

“He passed on around 10h00 hours on Tuesday and he was in hospital for three weeks,” his son Luka Kalambo said.

Exactly 40 years ago this month in Egypt, Kalambo and his team mates under the Croat-born coach Ante Buselic made their Africa Cup debut and later stormed to the final on the first attempt.

Zambia lost that final to Zaire in an epic replay in Cairo after drawing 2-2 after extra time in the first game on March 14 before the latter won game two 2-0 two days later.

It was the first and last time that format was used in a final.

Meanwhile, Kalambo went on to become a coach and his last appointment was with National Assembly in 2011 and prior to that handled Konkola Blades.

The ex-Ndola United player also had coaching stints abroad with various clubs in Botswana.

Kalambo is survived by a wife and six children.
