Zambia Police deputy public relations officer, Charity Munganga-Chanda, in an interview said that the incident happened at 08:00 hours yesterday.Police launched a manhunt for the 13 suspects who escaped from lawful custody at Chibolya police post.
“The 13 suspects are facing various offences ranging from murder, aggravated robbery, theft of motor vehicle, breaking into a building and committing a felony therein, assault and mere theft,” Munganga-Chanda said.
She appealed to members of the public with information leading to the apprehension of the suspects to report them to the nearest police station.
Munganga-Chanda said the 13 suspects that had escaped were not among those the Drug Enforcement Commission apprehended.
“They are not linked to the DEC operations. That is why I have even listed the offences that they committed. All the 13 that have escaped did not commit any crime related to drugs,” said Munganga-Chanda.
And there was commotion in Chibolya yesterday when the residents discovered that some of the suspects had escaped from the police post.
Chibolya residents blamed police officers for not keeping an eye on the suspects.
“What do you expect when you have police officers who are not serious? How can all the 13 suspects honestly escape when police officers were there? Unless they tell us that they were not there or that they were sleeping on duty. This is not acceptable,” sources said. “Some of the suspects who were in custody had committed murder…how can you honestly allow such a thing to happen? We are not safe and we don’t know what will happen now that they have escaped.”
But according to Chibolya’s Harry Mwanga Nkumbula ward 11 councillor Daniel Kalembe, of the 13 that had escaped, some were among those that had been apprehended by DEC.
“I am aware of the 13 that have escaped. I am told that some of them are among those that were apprehended by the DEC officers. I don’t really know how they escaped because the police are also saying that they are investigating. The best people to know how they escaped are the officers at Chibolya police post,” said Kalembi.
