Eight decomposed bodies of Zambians have been buried in Namibia after the neighbouring country ordered their disposal.
One of the bodies of Lukas Litemo, 35, was deposited into the Katima Mulilo Hospital Mortuary on May 2, 2011.
According to a written request by a mortuary assistant only identified as constable Muyonda to Katima Mulilo council management, some of the bodies were so badly decomposed that they could not be recognised.
“Some of these corpses are badly decomposed already. So we need to do something to avoid this bad smell in the mortuary. I’m requesting your good officers to do something,” Muyonda’s request read.
On March 19, 2014, Katima Mulilo council secretary Elizabeth Mutelo wrote to Sesheke police officer-in-charge seeking permission for the bodies of the Zambians to be disposed of.
On March 24, Sesheke district commissioner Mihupulo Yumei wrote to Western Province permanent secretary Augustine Seyuba requesting that the bodies of the Zambians be disposed of in Namibia after the officers from Sesheke Council and police had travelled to check on the corpses in that country.
“Sesheke District Council and Zambia Police had travelled to Namibia to check on the state of the bodies and decided that they be buried in Namibia as all bodies were in bad condition as shown by the attached list of the deceased people,” Yumei stated.
On March 28, 2014, Katima Mulilo governor Col Lawrence Sampofu wrote to Yumei informing him of the burial of the Zambians, which took place on April 3, 2014 at the Katima Mulilo cemetery in Namibia.
Out of the eight bodies, whose average age was 40, only one was identified as having come from Sinjembela in Western Province.
Three of the bodies were listed as having been deposited in the Katima Mulilo mortuary in 2012, while four were taken to the mortuary in 2013.
