Energy minister Christopher Yaluma says the government is determined to develop the electricity infrastructure in all parts of the country.
He said that the ministry would continue to invest in the Rural Electrification Programme in an effort to alleviate poverty and ensure that all Zambians enjoy social and economic development.
Speaking in Namwala at the official commissioning of the Mbeza Grid extension project, Yaluma said the government wanted to ensure that all Zambians, regardless of where they live, had a good quality of life.
Yaluma added that the Rural Electrification Master Plan had identified 1,217 rural growth centres that should be electrified by 2030 and that once this was attained, almost all parts of Zambia would have access to electricity.
He said that the government would like to see the local people set up small enterprises for social and economic development.
And host of the project, chief Bright Nalubamba of the Ila people of Namwala, commended President Michael Sata for electrifying the chiefdom.
He said for the first time since independence, his chiefdom had been electrified and schools, clinics and the community would greatly benefit from the project.
Meanwhile, Namwala district commissioner Gevar Nsanzya said the district had received unprecedented support from the current government.
