Gender and child development deputy minister Esther Banda says there are more male drunkards, whose focus is womanising.
Banda, who is a sociologist by profession, said in Lusaka yesterday that in as much as women drink beer, their habits could not be compared to those of men.
Last Wednesday, urologist Dr Francis Manda said there was too much careless drinking among women in Zambia.
However, Banda said Dr Manda should know that men were more reckless in their drinking habits than women.
“Of course, you cannot have 100 per cent of women not drinking and so on, but I don’t agree to say women are careless drunkards in Zambia than men. Some of them women can drink, others can’t. They are not true stories to say women are so reckless drunkards. That I totally disagree because even men should be looked at as well,” Banda said.
“I think we have got more drunkards in terms of men than women, which is a problem. Men, drinking too much is a big problem in Zambia because they wouldn’t even support their families and they concentrate on womanising.”
Banda said beer was not a good thing and so people should drink it in moderation.
“Of course I am not saying people should not drink, no! But they should do it in moderation and leave some senses to think,” said Banda.
Non-Governmental Coordinating Committee (NGOCC) board chairperson Beatrice Grillo said it was strange that Dr Manda wanted to ascribe the responsibility of parenting to women only, excluding men.
