18-Year Old Girl Commits Suicide After Mother’s Scolding

An 18 Year old girl of Moobola village in Namwala has allegedly committed suicide by drinking a toxic substance after her mother scolded her for arriving home late and abandoning some house chores.
Moobola ward councillor Eson Maluma and Southern Province Commissioner of Police Mary Chikwanda confirmed the death of Esther Sikachila, a grade nine pupil at Moobola Primary School.
Mr Maluma said yesterday that the girl died at Macha Mission Hospital on Tuesday after consuming the substance the previous day.
“The girl went home late on Monday night and absconded some domestic work, a situation that annoyed the mother who then shouted at her until she got frustrated and drank some substance” he said.
The girl was rushed to a local clinic and later transferred to Macha Mission Hospital where she died on Tuesday night.
“After drinking the [substance], she started battling for her life. We rushed her to a clinic in Moobola but due to the situation she was in, the medical staff there transferred her to Macha Mission Hospital where she passed away around 18:00 hours on Tuesday,” he said.
