A critical water shortage has hit the newly created Chirundu District forcing woman and children to go the crocodile infested Zambezi River in search of the commodity.
A check this morning, found local residents in groups with containers drawing water in the Zambezi river. And in an interview, Rita Banda of carbon compound, who spoke on behalf of the group, said, water shortage in Chirundu, has just gone out of control. We have been suffering for a long time of independence and yet God has blessed us with abundant water. Zambezi river is just few kilometers from our water utility company, Lusaka water and sewerage company (lwsco) this is almost a week there has been water shortages in most of our areas and we now just depending on the crocodile infest Zambezi river which is very dangerous. We are asking for the Government to do something. And a PF member Mrs Noria Chibamba of choonga compound, who is also former MMD District chairlady said, from the time Chirundu was given a district status the people of Chirundu has not benefited from CDF funds.
And former Area councilor, Mr. Gift Chanda said, it is unacceptable to find most public toilets at the border town with no running water.i was checking some public toilets in our area on Friday and most of them were crossed due to water crises which is very embarrassing.Chanda who is also MMD district Secretary, said, the money the Pf Government has been spending on by- election and various commission of enquires and could have been channeled into the water sector so the that the living standard of our people in this country can be uplifted. Allow me to make this opportunity again by asking the Government to look into the water crises in area critically. Chirundu is an international entry point. It’s quite embarrassing, visitors who are comes in our country sometimes they don’t even use public toilets due to erratic water supply. Chirundu needs a complete overhaul of the entire water system and built a new and bigger water plant that can carter for fast growing town.
